Memory Maximums?

I'm trying to keep two old HP Pavilions running well by appropriately upgrading the memory. I have an xt983 which according to the HP site has a maximum memory of 512MB. The crucial site said the max was 1024MB? I had bought a Crucial brand 512MB card locally and added it in the second slot. After a few boot ups the system crashed. I've restored the system but am concerned about how to correctly expand the memory. Also, I've noticed there may be several memory cards with the same specs but will have different part #s and prices. The one I bought locally was a different part # than the Crucial site recommended (but all the specs matched). I know one mistake might have been adding the 512 behind the factory 128. I open to expert advice??

On the same note my other model is a xt948. HP list the max at 1.5GB with a recommended 512MB. I don't know whats best based on that.

These are PC133 (168 PIn DIMM) although the HP site says the xt983 "(runs at 100)". Hope this makes sense.

Black Screen Syndrome

My Compaq Presario laptop had two 512M memory modules and having upgraded to Windows 7 (from XP) this 1GB was the minimum - so I thought I'd upgrade to its maximum. Crucial Mem Scan CE49374E31D926C3 said I could upgrade to 4GB - but also recommended that as my 32 bit OS would probably ignore anything over 3GB I decided to order a 2GB and a 1GB stick. Duly arrived, read the online advice, swapped the memory sticks. Absolutely nothing happened - well, the fan ran for 2 seconds. Completely black screen, no signs of life from the hard drive indicator. Online via our netbook, started reading other people's experiences and lots of quality advice.. Numerous attempts. Even had problems after I had re-installed the original 2x512MB sticks. Tried again - one new stick at a time. By themselves, both the 2GB and the 1GB worked in either slot. Put the 2GB in the bottom slot, put the 1GB in the top slot - not a peep (except for my trusty fan). Back to square one. Re-installed the original sticks, several unsuccessful attempts to restart, then success. Able to shut down correctly, took out the two 512 sticks, put the 2GB in the bottom slot and booted up. OK, and the computer properties said "2GB RAM". I'll settle for 2GB of RAM and now have a redundant 1GB stick. Advice, please!

Missing RAM

My Medion computer with Athlon 64 3200 processor and Nvidia NF-CK804 motherboard has, apparently, 1.5 Gb of usable RAM. That's what shows on the boot-up test. But when I run a Belarc audit, it reports that there is a 1024MB stick in slot A0, 1024MB in slot A1, 512MB in slot A2 and 512MB in slot A3. In other words, I should have 3 Gig of memory. Can anyone explain this? Are the sticks incorrectly placed? Might one or more sticks have failed? Can I do anything to regain the lost memory? (I have not at this stage 'opened the box' - I wanted to see if any advice was available before doing anything that might put the machine out of action.)

John

Windows 7 Blue Screen with new 8GB on Abit In9 32X-max

Recently upgraded from 4 GB of CM2X1024-6400C4 800MHz 4-4-4-12 in my Abit IN9 32X-Max motherboard. I had been running Vista 32 HP. I first replaced the memory with 8 GB of CM2X2048-6400C4DHX and brought up Vista which ran apparently with no problems for a short while. I then took the system down and then did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate. All went well until I started getting Blue Screens intermittently. I eventually ran memory diagnostics which told me I had a memory hardware problem. I then removed one module and rebooted with 6GB. Memory diagnostics ran fine. I then reinstalled the 4th module thinking maybe I got lucky and found the bad module or possibly it was seated incorrectly. Failed diagnostics. I then put the suspected bad module in slot 3 and ran with 6 GB again. Again diagnostics passed. So the memory modules seem to work at least as atotal of 6GB. I do not overclock or have not changed any clocking or voltages, etc. from defaults.

So I have concluded that I either have a bad slot on the mobo, a mobo problem or possibly a video card conflict (GeForce 7900GS).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks, Jim

Advent 9117 Ram Upgrade Issues

Hello all,

I have recently purchased two 1Gb RAM chips for my parents laptop based on the advice of the crucial.com scanner. The laptop came with two 512Mb chips, which i am trying to replace. I have an issue that i hope you may be able to help with or guide me in the right direction....

When i removed the both old RAM and replaced with the new, and replaced the battery etc, i switched the laptop on and all i got was a black screen. Both chips are working as are both chip slots. I have tried all combinations to determine this, ie chip 1 on its on in both slots, laptop loads fine, chip 2 on its own in both slots, works fine, even chip 1 and then 2 with one of the old 512Mb chips in the second slot, each combination works fine and 'my computer' properties recognised there was 1Gb or 1.5Gb whichever the situation was.

just that when i put both 1Gb chips in the slots, the laptop does not want to do anything, power comes on but nothing on the screen, no bios loading, nothing....

I am at a loss, i have tried to Google it but nothing is set in stone as to what the cause of this is. Some sites have said it's to do with BIOS, some have said one of the chips have to stay - 'non-removable'?, another says you can replace both with no problems. If one was non-removable surely that goes against the general rule of you should have the same size chips in both slots....

HELP?!? many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer a suggestion or resolution.

Hope someone can provide some advice for me.I am running Windows XP with 512mb of RAM.My PC is getting slow despite using one or two freeware programmes which were supposed to speed things up.

I decided to add some more RAM. The Crucial scan recognised my A-Open motherboard and recommended the appropriate 184-pin 1GB memory which is now on order.

Having read up on how to instal this my plan is to take out the 512mb which should be in slot 1 and instal the new 1GB in that slot.I will then instal the 512mb in slot 2 giving me 1.5GB RAM in all.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct and, equally important, will it work?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Have recently ordered and installed 4x 1GB 184-DIMMs to replace 4x 512MB DIMMs in my Dell Dimension 8300 series PC.

Specificially two of these: 2GB kit (1GBx2), 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC3200 memory module .CT441222

Installed fine. Windows reports 4GB of RAM now installed - although, as expected Win 7 can't use it all.

Was rather hoping to see a performance improvement. None particularly evident.

Rather worried that 'Windows Experience Index' Memory (RAM) subscore has fallen from 4.9 to 4.5. Does that sound right?

Have I wasted my money? Have I missed a trick?

Upgrade module

I went though the scan for my Toshiba M50 series and subsequently ordered the module as advised as being compatible but on trying to install the module I discovered that the location slot was out of line and on trying to fit the module slightly damaged it. When I finally seated the module I had a black screen but on refitting the original module all OK.

I shall never order anything like this on-line again as this has been an expensive lesson.
