I cannot get Ballisitx 2x 1GB DDR2 PC2-6400 to post in this new barebones machine from ASUS. 1 long 2 short beeps indicating it cant read the memory. I have tried moving the memory around with using 1 or 2 slots.

Ballistix part number 72956. I borrowed some similar memory from a friend and that was OK. The machine is quite new and not on the list of approved machines from Crucial but I wouldn't have thought it a problem.
The Ballistix memory came from a working system.
Grateful for any suggestions.
Mike

Mike,
I haven't got an ASUS board around to test, but your problem sounds a lot like mine in:
Cutting through all the flailing about I've done, try something like this:
1) Borrow a non-Ballistix DIMM you expect will work.
2) Get that installed and boot successfully into BIOS. (If you can't, go back to step 1.)
3) Disable as many of the "Auto" settings as you're comfortable/experienced with, instead setting them to precisely what you believe your DIMM should support by default.
4) Save your changes and power the system down.
5) Replace that DIMM with one of your Ballistix.
6) Power on and pray.
7) Mutter obscenities while you power off and put the borrowed DIMM back in.
8) Repeat steps 3-7 while adjusting one value at a time, until you get lucky and find a configuration that works for you.
Hopefully someone with more wizardry will come along and give you specific values to tweak for your RAM. It might help to post the full part Ballistix number -- 72956 doesn't look like it's long enough.
Sorry I don't have any better advice. Maybe you'll have better luck than me....
