Hard Drive is partitioned into "C", "F" and "G", why??

Dell Dimension 2400, 40GB Hard Drive Maxtor was partitioned by the previous owner? and shows as:

Local Disk "C" 19GB (WINDOWS, Program Files, etc.)

RESTORE "F" 1GB (Driver Folder)

Local Disk "G" 19GB (A lot of IDX files, what are they?)

Why was the partition done? Is that normal?

How does one partition a Hard Drive???

And, can the partition be undone?

Like when "C" runs out of free space, can I integrate "G" into "C" somehow?

How would I do that without screwing up anything and create major problems?

usually dell comes with a restore partition so they can save money and not send you a restore or windows cd. it's not a big deal to have the C and G drive just make sure you do not run out of space. and yes you can create one complete partition using software... one option is booting from a linux cd like ubuntu and running gparted to resize the disk, symantec makes some disk partitioning software that work straight from windows and of course you can reinstall the os deleting all files and making a whole new partition...
