I’ve heard that the Crucial v4 SSD runs on SATA 3Gb/s and the Crucial m4 SSD runs on SATA 6Gb/s. What does all this SATA stuff mean and why does it matter?
SATA is a technical term, and while it may sound confusing, it’s actually quite simple: think of it like a water pipe. The bigger the pipe, the more water is able to flow through at a given time. It’s the same thing for computers, except instead of moving water you’ve got bandwidth, or data transfer speeds. SATA 3Gb/s bandwidth simply means that your computer can only process up to three gigabits of data per second. Likewise, SATA 6Gb/s means that your system can only process up to 6 gigabits of data per second – it’s just like having a bigger water pipe.
Why does this matter? If you buy an SSD that’s designed for higher bandwidth and your system is designed for a lower bandwidth, you’ll end up paying for performance that your computer isn’t able to use.
