I recently replaced the hard drive in my MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008) with a new Crucial M225 SSD and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. The SSD drive works great and I have seen a huge improvement in speed. However, I am no longer able to use Boot Camp and boot from a Windows CD or DVD. I've tried XP Pro, Vista Ultimate and Windows 7. The MacBook Pro just hangs at the grey startup screen. I've read through the Apple forums and other people are having the same issue after upgrading to Crucial SSDs. I worked with Apple technical support on this issue and they recommended I reinstall my original drive and see if that corrects the issue. I did just that and that did resolve it.
Here are some particulars about my specific hardware:
Apple MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008)
Model: MB512LL/A
CPU: 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT w/ 512 MB
Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
SMC Version (system): 1.28f2
HD: Crucial 256GB M225 2.5" Solid-State Drive (CT256M225)
So, the Crucial SSD drive is causing my MacBook Pro to not be able to boot from any Windows installation media (CD or DVD). Does anyone know a way to resolve this issue? Is there a firmware upgrade that can be installed to correct it?

Duplicate of this thread: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD
I also have a query out on superuser.com here.
OCZ Vertex drives (as well as well any SSDs utilizing the Indilinx Barefoot controller) seem to exhibit this specific issue.
My best educated guess after wrestling with this issue for nearly a week is that the Apple EFI 1.7 firmware update makes everything magically work, but the firmware update was only extended back to mid-2008 MacBooks, leaving early 2008 MacBooks out in the dust.
Having purchased my MacBook brand new from Apple in December 2008 and ending up with what is officially defined as an "early 2008" MacBook without firmware support is kind of awful, but hopefully an Indilinx firmware update will fix this.
The most recently released Barefoot firmware (v1.4) doesn't seem to resolve this issue, and I haven't seen any official acknowledgement of the issue from either Indilinx or Crucial.

Would ReFIT work? I've used that instead of bootcamp to get three OS's on my 2008 macbook pro with much success

rEFIt doesn't fix the root of the issue. You have additional boot options, but booting into _any_ Windows partition will continue to fail. This includes boot disks, external drives, the SSD itself...
Here's the madness I've gone through so far:
- I took my old spindle drive, hooked it up to an external enclosure and tried to boot from my Boot Camp partition with rEFIt. I got the same boot hang booting into my Boot Camp partition from that drive.
- I've imaged the Boot Camp partition from my spindle drive to my SSD. Continues to hang at boot.
- I've zeroed out the entire drive and attempted to boot from the Win7 DVD. No dice.
- I've set up a machine with testdisk and attempted to re-write the GPT partition information to the SSD based on a thread with similar problems using XP on completely unrelated hardware. Nothing.
- I set up a thumb drive with the Win7 ISO and attempted to boot from that using rEFIt. No dice.
- I've tried to boot from the FreeDOS ISO images to flash my drive. Those don't even boot.
- I've flashed from 1517 to 1819 and tried all this stuff again. Still nothing. Note that in order to update the firmware, I had to _ignore_ the "firmware flash" switch on the drive that people have been posting about. Additionally, I had to hook the drive up to the internals of another computer that is nearly 5 years old. It recognized the drive like a champ, though, which is more than I can say for my MacBook.
- I've tried to flash the EFI 1.6 firmware using the leaked 1.7 to 1.6 downgrader. The flasher errors out (probably for the better, in my case)
- I've posted my lament on the Crucial support forums.
- I've posted my lament on superuser.com
- I've posted my lament on the OCZ forums.
From what I can tell, the M225 isn't visible through the emulated BIOS layer used to make Boot Camp happen. Something terrible happens when the machine attempts to access it, and the whole thing just hangs at the gray "Booting" screen.
Note that this is specific to _early_ 2008 MacBook models (4,1 I believe). I bought my MacBook brand new from Apple in December of 2008, and that was an early 2008 model.
To make matters worse, searching for this problem is a huge hassle because the surface area is so huge and MacBook models vary so much while using the same name. Is it an EFI problem? A Crucial problem? An SSD problem? An OSX 10.5 problem? A Boot Camp problem? An OSX 10.6 problem? A Win7 problem? An optical drive problem? An Indilinx Barefoot controller problem?
My current research has me believing that the Apple EFI 1.7 Firmware updater fixes this issue, but Apple hasn't extended that olive branch to early 2008 MacBook models. A machine I purchased _less than a year ago_ is outside of that support window. I could be wrong, though.
All that said, the drive works great within OSX. Not being able to Boot Camp the machine is a huge deal breaker for me, though.

I see here...

...that a firmware update on the Intel X25-M seems to have fixed the SSD issue for someone.

I'm hoping that since IBM made a patch available, Crucial will as well. It seems like it is possible to fix this issue by either Apple or Crucial. Lets see if either company steps up and helps.

Same issue here with a Crucial 256GB SSD.
Crucial, please fix this, or make Apple do so.

Hi all,
We appreciate your concerns and patience on this. Many of us are Mac users as well, it is important for us to find solutions. We continue to work with the controller manufacturer to develop solutions. We do not have anything specific right now. As and when we have more information we will post it here.
Thank you once again for your feedback.

Does that mean Indilinx has confirmed this as a bug with the Barefoot controller firmware?
