I finally got all the parts to put my new Windows 7 Pro 64bit computer together last night. I used a new Crucial RealSSD 128GB drive for my OS and Programs, and a separate WD 1TB drive for my data. That way the SSD will have plenty of room and will hopefully keep the performance high.
I chose an Asus P6X58D Premium motherboard because it has a Marvell SATA3 6Gb/s controller. Crucials RealSSD drives also use the Marvell controller, so I figured it would be good from a compatibility standpoint. My motherboard already had the latest firmware, so I booted into Windows 7 with all the BIOS defaults.
I'm pretty new to Vista and Windows 7, so I spent a while getting things set up the way I like them. I ran a CrystalDiskMark benchmark to see what the SSD performance looked like. The sequential reads were about 320 or so. Not too high, but not terrible either. By that time it was pretty late at night and I forgot to make a screen print.
My SSD was running in IDE mode, so I decided to change over to AHCI mode. It's pretty easy, just make sure you change Windows before you change the BIOS. It seemed that the AHCI change helped SSD performance quite a bit.
Here's a current screen print of CrystalDiskMark after the AHCI change:
You can see that the writes are much slower than the 256GB RealSSD drive. That's OK with me because I don't plan to do much writing on this SSD. Installing the OS and programs is a one time operation. From then on it will be reads that are important. That's my plan anyway.
If I had it to do again, I would probably change the BIOS to AHCI before installing the OS. I suspect Windows would just install the SSD in AHCI mode from the start.
My plans now are to do some of the simple tweaks like turning off drive indexing. I'll post back if I find anything else that helps... or hurts.

OH, btw, if you run ATTO your numbers would be even better. I'm not sure what is what between all the apps, but I would like to believe that ATTO is on the money

Thanks for the compliments. I think that the new Crucial RealSSD C300 drives go very well with the Marvell SATA3 6Gb/s controller chips in the new Asus motherboards.
I ran an ATTO disk benchmark.
It sure is apparent that that the writes are slower on the 128GB version.

One of the things I have been very interested in is making sure the TRIM command works correctly on my new system. Everything I've read so far suggests that it does, I'd just like a little more information or assurance. There is a very interesting article on the Corsair web site about determining if TRIM is turned on and how to turn it on if it is off. Here's the link:
Basically you just run a command line query against a parameter named DisableDeleteNotify. If the returned value is "0" your TRIM is on and the OS is sending TRIM data to the drive. Here's a screen print of the command on my system.
You can see that it was (correctly) turned on.
I would still like to find a scanner or hard disk sniffer to show the actual TRIM commands. I haven't found anything yet. I know that there must be hard disk sniffers because the TRIM software engineers would have to use them to debug their TRIM code.
Anyway, I hope this helps some of you...

Trim is on by default in Windows, even if you only have mechanical drives so that command doesn't show you much.
As you've said you need pro tools to check it - maybe even specialist hardware from what I've seen hinted on another site so we got no chance. We've just got to go with making sure that we use the individual components that the pro's say work.

I have found one tool that helps. It doesn't show low level commands like TRIM, but it is useful for showing what your hard drive is doing in real time. It's free:
I've used Process Explorer for lots of things over the years. Sometimes if my hard drive starts activating, I'll start up Process Monitor and check the File IO to see what it's doing. It's still useful, but it's harder to hear the hard drive now...

Someone recently asked me to run a Windows Experoence Index to see how it benchmarked my Crucial drive. It liked my drive, but didn't seem to think much of my CPU or memory.

I've been using my new computer for almost two months since I originally built it. It has the same Asus P6X58D Premium motherboard and the same Crucial C300 128GB SSD that I originally installed.
I thought it might be interesting to see how the C300 SSD performance compared to when I first installed it two months ago. Asus' P6X58D Premium is a pretty popular motherboard for other members with Crucial C300 SSD drives, so I thought I'd post my results.
It looks almost identicle to my original CrystalDiskMark benchmark (first post in this thread). I did update to a newer version of CrystalDiskMark and use a larger sample size, so that could have a small influence on the results.
Remember that this is a 128GB C300 SSD. The writes are limited to about 140 MB/s.
I still have about 100GB of free space. My plan is to keep as much free space on the SSD as possible to aid in garbage claening and TRIM. It seems to work because it hasn't slowed down in two months.
