Installed more memory, 'Windows Experience Index' Memory subscore has fallen

Have recently ordered and installed 4x 1GB 184-DIMMs to replace 4x 512MB DIMMs in my Dell Dimension 8300 series PC.

Specificially two of these: 2GB kit (1GBx2), 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC3200 memory module .CT441222

Installed fine.  Windows reports 4GB of RAM now installed - although, as expected Win 7 can't use it all.

Was rather hoping to see a performance improvement.  None particularly evident.

Rather worried that 'Windows Experience Index' Memory (RAM) subscore has fallen from 4.9 to 4.5.  Does that sound right?

Have I wasted my money?  Have I missed a trick?

Re: Installed more memory, 'Windows Experience Index' Memory subscore has fallen

The Windows Experience Index is not necessarily an accurate reflection of real-world performance. Where you will see a difference in performance from the added memory is primarily in multi-tasking between a large number of applications, or when rendering large image files, or loading large amounts of data. Since memory does not technically speed up data processing in a computer, but rather optimises it, the speed of for example web browsing, will remain roughly the same.

I hope that clarified things a little bit. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. :smileyhappy:
